Summerschool Climate and Energy,

From 2 until 7 august WISE organised a Summerschool on climate change and energy. Location was the outdoor centre of Veere in Zeeland. Subjects like renewable energy, nuclear energy, climate change, climate negotiations, clean development mechanism, were discussed and presented.

Participants from 14 different countries attended the summerschool. Ranging from Australia, to India, to the Ukrain to host nation The Netherlands. The program included workshops, lectures, presentations, a visit to COVRA (the dutch nuclear waste facility in Nieuw Dorp), the action climate camp near Antwerpen.
Purpose of the Summerschool was to educate people about the effects of climate change on our energy supply and possible sollutions for the future. Some of the options are using more renewable energy, decreasing the energy consumption in the world, reduction of CO2 emissions; by means of planting new trees, carbon capture and the likes. All this with the intend to give people enough knowledge to be able to hold their grounds in debate and for some to gain enough knowledge to be able to attend the climate summit in Copenhagen in December.

In Copenhagen the next climate summit will be held with the goal to attain a follow up of the Kyoto Protocol. This next treaty should give directives on how we should reduce our energy consumptions and reduce CO2 emissions with the goal to keep temperature rise on earth within the 2 degrees margin.

30 young adults will join WISE in Copenhagen. Overthere WISE will lobby against the possibility of a nuclear renaisance. (A lot of politicians nowadays see nuclear energy as a possible sollution against climate change. We do not think this is the case. Nuclear energy does emit CO2 and hence is not an alternative to fossil energy sources.) This Summerschool was one of the projects of WISE to search for participants for Copenhagen.

Participants of the Summerschool were very enthousiastic about the whole week. A lot of them wanted to know if we would organise this again. Depending on funding we will repeat it next year.
Also quit some press attention was created. The local newspaper PZC published an article. Die Deutsch Welle (a German radiostation) also did an item as did Radio Zeeland (http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,4562320,00.html).

Considering these results the Summerschool was quit succesful.
Hopefully we can do it again next year.

There were some nice pictures taken. Here is the link to the album.

Groene stroom?
